The war passed through Poland twice. Moreover, during the first two years of the war Stalin was every bit as busy killing Poles in his half of the country as Hitler was busy killing Poles (and Jews) in his half.
As if all of that wasn't bad enough, after the war Stalin proceeded to kill still more Poles.
Eastern Europe was not a good place to call home in the 40's.
