When you are hiring developers make sure you put systems in place to manage development tasks and track progress, source control, documentation and build processes.... That way if your programmer flakes you can pick up another and get going fairly quickly.

I've met a few non-programmers that have outsourced development and are paying people without any oversight of their product or where they are with it..
