I had to put two of my gf's animals down last year due to cancer and kidney failure. I helped raise them and it was tough for us to do but they were at the point that they could no longer live comfortably. For what it's worth, if you are forced to put it to sleep, from my experiences, it's pretty quick and painless.
If you have never had to put an animal to sleep before, check out last minutes with oden on vimeo or youtube. I stumbled across it before we came to that point with the first pet and I feel it helped me prepare for it.
