Bryan G, There's health insurance, car insurance, fire insurance, etc. I view guns as protection insurance. It's there but hopefully will never be used. Again, I don't own one out of fear. I own one to be prepared. I also really enjoy target shooting them.
I grew up in a military family/household, my father was also a big hunter. Guns were always around and were never viewed as a big deal so naturally I don't see what the issue with owning one is.
I think a lot of the "difference" if that's the word to use, between pro/con ownership also has to do with comfort levels around firearms. I'm very comfortable so it's second nature having one around. Anyway, take care man.
(and situational awareness is the most important defense and no gun is required for that)
