Eventally you will realise that theres only so many smaller sites that you can handle. About 7 years agoe I think we got to 15 - 20 sites each with a few thousand hits a day and maybe $500 a month per site when we realised that to get any bigger we had to merge.
Now we push around 100,000 uniques a day through TAC and revenues (not sure I should say this) about $25 - 30k per month. Thers no way you could that with a bunch of small standalone sites
As I understand it, Google is only downranking what it considered are non / poor content sites (ie link farms etc) so providing your main site has some decent content then you should be fine. Infact, weve seen an increase in google traffic recently
My advice, is pick one domain and make it your main site. Perhaps with a few feeder sites to get it going
