Usually too much nice design features distract from the content, while the content is what you try to sell. So in general simple adult sites do a lot better than sites that look amazingly. People want to see in one overview what they get, they don't want to see all sorts of arty farty stuff, they want porn. Over-complicated design and navigation just doesn't work well in porn.
