To me asking which I prefer is kind of like asking "do you prefer Intel or Chevy" - they are both useful for different purposes.
Phone and ICQ are good for back and forth conversations, where something needs to be discussed. I much prefer email for "please do this", "ok, done". I don't need to interrupt your work day demanding immediate attention on ICQ for most things.
Also people forget that instant messaging, becoming popular long after email, is called INSTANT messaging for a reason. It's designed to by instant, whereas email is designed to be RELIABLE. Don't leave me an important message on ICQ and assume that I'll eventually read it. If you want the message to be reliably delivered even if I'm dieting down as you send it, use email. If you want to chat about something, see if you find me on ICQ or not.
