Google has always preferred high quality, handwritten, regulary updated sites. It's just that up until Panda, they hadn't quite figured out how to administer that goal on a mass scale. Now they have (in spades), so the article spinners and link farms that went along for years are now in shock. There are hundreds of stories of sites that have lost big this year and either have to rethink everything or move on to another job. It does suck on a personal level for a lot of people, but the truth is, it's not like Google didn't say what it wanted to begin with.
