They need to be allowed to do whatever they want. The sooner we move away from oil, the sooner we can allow that happen. As far as we should care at that point, if they decide as a society they want to live in the year 900 good luck to them. I agree with your original point though, the Arab spring will not turn out as people please. Heck, even Turkey is heading back towards an Islamic society.
