Like with any job or career.... the worst in professionals are still better than those in amateurs or at least the best of the average joes.
Although to add... An great amateur could be a great professional if given the chance with the right tools. A tradesmen never blames his tools, but must have the right tools for the job, lighting, camera, lens etc etc.
A photographer with a 5d canon should be able to make a photo look twice as good as taking the same photo with a 350d. Yes, the angles of the photo, the lighting & everything else comes into account, but depending on finances, this alters the appearance of the photo
