To debunk something you have to actually have to prove how it's wrong. Not point out a mostly relative event in history that correlates to your point.
Here, this is basically what he does. Ok, this is EXACTLY what he does.
He wants to make a point about global warming, he wants to debunk that global warming is caused by (insert something here). So, he takes a relevant point about history to coincide with his point. He says that "Look! As we've gone through history there are less pirates in the world while the average global temperature has increased. Therefore global warming is caused by having less pirates".
He doesn't actually debunk a damn thing. He just gives you a relevant piece of information that coincides with his side and opinion.

The pirates and global warming graph is an excellent illustration of a very common tactic. Combined with picking dates for comparison carefully and using words like "stagnated" to imply something went bad when it fact it didn't change at all, someone can make it look like the economic problems are caused by raisins.
One has to apply some common sense and ask themselves "is spending twice as much as you take in most likely going to improve your situation, or make you go bankrupt?" Simple common sense thinking cuts through the charts comparing unemployment in 1964 to the color of shoes and other irrelevant BS.
