Banners are overused...however each person's experience is different.
Try a bit of both.
Template 1 version A:
Maybe 1 banner at the top with some small size 1 juicy text right underneath it.
Then nothing but text the rest of the way.
Template 1 version B:
Nothing but text.
Find out which one sends you more ctrs to the join page then go with it. This is the part of tweaking you will have to do in order to get a good working template.
