These kids aren't stupid, but because they barely speak English they can't pass the classes and are getting held back. This is creating an entire new class of citizens - Hispanics who flunk out of school because they can't speak English well enough.

I have two friends of mine, Jose and Sandra. They are both here illegally, but all three of their children were born in the US. She works cleaning houses, and he takes odd jobs under the table. Their daughter (who oddly enough shares the same birthday as me) was in my daughter's class. After six years of knowing this family, their daughter has failed an entire grade and been held back twice. Great kid, she's not stupid, and she speaks English - but not well enough to learn in it.
I could go on and on, probably write a book on this subject. I have had perspectives from multiple angles, being a white female who grew up in an area where I was the minority in Southern Cali, and now live in the deep South where it is half white half black, but all American. Yeah I hear you, and I left Cali for many reasons. It's still awkward for me to be around too many white people at once.

I don't know what to say about your friend's daughter flunking. I grew up with so many kids who didn't have english speaking parents, and they succeeded and many went to college and are now awesome people, some now citizens if they were not. Mexican, Chinese, even Columbian. Sounds like the parents need to contact the school (they don't have bilingual programs?) and make an effort to help their kid more, nothing to do with the parents fault. Maybe they should move to East LA. lol

When I lived in So Cal, all the pizza coupons I got in the mail and local billboards were only in Spanish. Then they had that protest and I was like wtf you guys hate me? and I realized I really needed to move. But there is a solution, and Cali is working on it.

The people who will be receiving this college money aren't going to be the same assholes littering in the street with no papers and treating where they live like it's fucking Tijuana! That's for sure. Class, it rules.

Let me add, you think the Mexican kids in Cali are failling? You should see what the local schools with white and black kids are dealing with down here. It's complete shit. And they were born here and speak english. If your kid's friend gets through school behind a couple years, they'll still have better education than if they grew up in Mexico, or Louisiana public schools.

ps. I was born in East LA. :D
