Your right, it does not guarantee anything at all. However, it opens up doors that wouldn't be open to someone who didn't go through college. For example, my position as a manager at Playboy required a college degree. Without it, they wouldn't have even considered me.
Also, it helps when your fighting to get a job. When hiring, which candidate are you going to pick? The one who was too lazy or not smart enough to go to college, or the one who got two degrees in four years?
