Newsweek Ranks Philippines Best Country for Women in Asia
This popular magazine analyzed 165 countries to see which ones offered women the best quality of life. The Philippines ranked 17.
Newsweek Magazine recently released a report entitled "Best and Worst Countries for Women," which ranked 165 countries' treatment of women in terms of rights and quality of life. The Philippines is the only Asian country in the top 20, landing at no. 17 with a score of 86.3 out of 100.
"This is an affirmation of the respect our culture has always accorded to Filipino women—one that manifests itself as well in our government’s efforts to promote equal gender opportunities in all spheres of public policies and programs," presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a statement. "Rest assured, our administration remains committed in advancing the quality of life of all Filipinos from all walks of life."
Using data from the United Nations and the World Economic Forum, Newsweek ranked the countries according to different aspects of living: justice, health, education, economics, and politics. European country Iceland got full marks and snagged the top spot in the overall ranks with Sweden, Canada, Denmark, and Finland rounding out the top 5.
Meanwhile, the worst country for women is the Central African country Chad, which got a score of 0. Afghanistan, Yemen, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Mali followed close behind.
