Had similar experiences too What has worked for me in mainstream is creating or acquiring solid content. Not Indian written stuff, but legitimate stuff that becomes an authority in its field. It's nice when you go around acquiring back-links and people WANT to link to you, or others just add your links to Wikipedia, etc because the content is good.
