What constitutes "the best" service depends on the needs of the person using that service.
If you want tons of space, reliable delivery, ease of use... Gmail is great.
If you want confidentiality, then of course Gmail isn't that great. We've done tests in the past with gmail accounts to see how far Google takes its email-content-scanning. When you set up a new site (fresh domain), with no inbound links and upload page in a deep dir structure (with no inbound links) and never even visit that page using a browser that phones home to google (like chrome does), Google bot should normally not be able to find it. Well, when you mention the url of that page in a couple of emails exchanged between gmail accounts, google bot will come and visit that url.
