Well, that sounds like your teacher may have been using critical thinking techniques - not GIVING the answer, but allowing the students to devise their own methodologies and reach their own conclusions.
Many older teachers have become set in their ways and focus mainly on maintaining discipline so end up using either lecture techniques and/or busy work. Perhaps your teacher was using techniques you did not recognize as being the "normal" teaching style to facilitate your critical thinking and thus
learning the subject matter as opposed to rote memorization.
