It's friggin insurance.
If you buy home owner's, car, life or business insurance. No one made you, except basic car insurance. When you have a claim you file. No one bitches. There are people who abuse the system. Especially fire insurance on failing businesses. But in every system there will be fraud. So how come no one says stop car insurance because the govt. demands I have it. That's because you are more likely to be hit by someone who doesn't have insurance if it wasn't required. ow many failing restaurants seem to have fires?
Social security and unemployment are insurance policies that the people who collect paid into. Granted, there are people who abuse the system, but the majority do not.
Food stamps aren't quite insurance, but a lifeline for people, short-term or long term in a bad situation. Some are the working poor, some are recently divorced stay at home mothers who never worked outside the home.Some are multi-generation welfare families. Some of that, the parents taught their children no better, some is just bad luck, some is the oppression of whites against people of color.
Food stamps are also issued to any family, no matter how rich, if they are foster parents or adopt a child in need.
Read some of Jim Thompson's (Grifters) autobiographical books, his family went overnight in the depression from super rich to starving.
