There are 15 top US engines and a few top euro engines to hit. the ODP (DMOZ) can help you with rankings on other engines, but you can still achieve them without being listed there. Also, always hand submit. It's worth the 5 minute investment. If you don't want to optimize your site and go through all of this "hassle" then you can always go for pay-per-click and see results immediately. Stop complaining
