I agree with you that it is certainly easier to sell what we like but it's definitely not a requirement. I'm straight and I design gay websites. So do most of the adult site designers. That means we either have to learn about the market we're seling to or get advice from someone that does know.

For example. I design mainstream sites too. I don't know anything about the law, or engineering, or medicine or most of the businesses I design websites for. But I've designed hundreds of sites for lawyers, engineers and doctors. I was able to give them exactly what they wanted by taking the time to do the research. Sure, after doing that I still wouldn't be able to pass the bar and perform laser eye surgery, but that's my point. If someone asks me to design a gay website I'll do it and do a damn good job at it and along the way I've even started a few of my own because I've found it easier to make money with a gay site.
