I have a Motorola I bought waaaay back in 2006. Its compact, its built like a (very thin) brick, and it never loses its signal. I can drive nails into drywall with this phone (which I did in a fit of drunken anger...) without hurting it.
It was a bitch finding a new battery, but I wouldn't trade this phone for anything - and I have more than enough "Fido Dollars" to get a replacement. This phone is indestructible - I'm keeping it.
As a matter of fact, we had a huge thunder / hail storm in Toronto a couple days back. My son and my girlfriend both have Fido phones. They had no signal - their phones were - for all purposes - dead, yet my shitty old MOTO could still make calls.
I also pay for my son's and daughter's mobile phones. My daughter has gone through about six BlackBerries in the last few years - they are fragile pieces of shit; and my son's phone didn't even live as long as his contract. He got some LG piece of shit. It would break if I looked at it the wrong way.
Still have to pay for them, though!
No matter what phone you buy now, its a fragile, flimsy, overpriced, disposable piece of shit. Except that you can't easily (legally) dispose of them. If you want Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube on your phone - great. I just like to be able to make - and receive - phone calls and text messages. You wouldn't think so highly of your rapidly-becoming-obsolete smart phone if you had three contracts to pay each month.
No, I'll stick with my old MOTO. I can type in numbers and actually talk to people. Don't give a fuck about internet connectivity.
Edit: Damn, that was a long post.
