15 years ago I put down my dog for biting - a Cocker Spaniel, sweet as sweet can be - but turned aggressive as he was getting older. It was the right thing to do. Unfortunately there are TONS of dogs out there that should be put to sleep as well, but the owners either does not have the guts or the intellect to do so.

I disagree. A cocker spaniel s expected to get cranky in his old age. its normal. To put a pet down because they bit someone ... especially because of old age is dumb. YOu should if anything just secluded your pet until he died of age or cause. You must not have had much love for your pet if thats all it took. Its not a guts or intellect move there, not in my book. It was a "I dont have the time or love to deal with this situation." Either way, it wasnt the, IMO, right thing to do.
