I really like the iPhones. My iPhone 4 works perfectly, never drops a call (I'm on Telus), and the battery seems to last forever. I don't know anything about the iPhone 5's yet. I won't upgrade right away but might in a year or so if they're worth it.
If you go shopping for an iPhone, I would suggest that you buy it from Apple and then activate it at the courier of your choice. You will learn a lot more about the iPhone and they will recommend how to use it to simplify your life with the right software, etc. You can then activate your phone at your service provider of choice. If you buy your phone from a service provider, you have to pay financing fees + interest + be locked into a long term contract. Why buy financing if you don't need to?
