there are ways to make it so no red flags or foot prints are givin.

host and location of host ( use MANY hosts and in diff parts of the usa or world, depends where your trying to rank )
many diff c classes with each host ( only put a few sites on each c class " diff ips " )
hide whois ( this can help a bit, but not the best )
make sure you have your own links on the sites aswell, not just the same list oflinks on each site

im not going to spill all the beans, but those are a few things to look into
I , and my clients, would rather get backlinks from as many different sources as possible. We are not looking at numbers of backlinks, but rather, number of sources for backlinks. The larger "THAT" number, the better we seem to do.

"THAT" number is what my service provides. Hundreds of backlinks from websites all over the world via a-b-c link trades. They keep your link up or I remove their link. That is their incentive.
