I should probably point out that while the UK is officially metric, it uses barely more metric measurements than the US. People here also stick with the pounds, ounces, miles, and pints. (Especially pints.)
The answer is really simple... Any standards conversion is difficult. Changing the way people think isn't easy. The US, as a very large country in relative isolation, just didn't have enough reason to do it. The UK, as a powerful island nation, was in a similar situation.
The fact that we're both stubborn as hell and don't respect Europe much probably didn't help.
