The pharmacist did probably mete out a little more "justice" than the situation called for, especially considering the fact that the perps were kids; HOWEVER, when you are an armed robber, such are the risks. And, their ages may not have been noticeable from the point of view of staring down the barrel of a gun.
When you are victimized the way the pharmacist was, the adrenaline surges. Cops deliver excessive force all the time in similar situations and they are trained professionals --and they are also rarely prosecuted.
Given the extreme stress that the pharmacist experienced, I am not convinced of his criminal intent.
