WOW, that's crazy how they still lock you in even without a contract. I went through Verizon and fortunately for me, they didn't make me get one, although, they tried to sell me a new phone to get the contract.

I used to have an Iphone when they first came out through AT&T, then after my contract expired, I just dropped it and went down to a cheap Net 10 prepaid phone because I rarely used it. Now going back to a smart phone, I don't know why I went this long without it, ha ha.
