You can mail and make a lot of money if you do it right.

I know plenty of people who've just started (mainstream) and are making literally $500-1000.00 per day. That being said, there are a number of factors to take into consideration.

1. It takes money to make money.
2. You need to have a way to show time/date/url stamp to be legal CAN-SPAM compliant.
3. You need to "scrub" your lists taking out the screamers.
4. You will need either an ESP or MTA depending on how you want to do it.
5. If you do it yourself, you need to learn about IP health management, inboxing, etc..
6. If you mail adult, you need to consider the Utah/Michigan 'minors' law. Must be over 18.
7. You will want to set up a DBA/corporation to show in all of your correspondence.
8. If you try and use filthy lists, you will burn up servers and IP space, which is costly. You will then end up next to Bill Waggoneer on the ROKSO list.
