well if that's the case "Recoleta" , "Palermo" & "Barrio Norte" will be nice areas to spend a week or two.
Cost of living :
Good question

I've read you would come with kids, so I have to tell you is safe to take them. Here it's just like another big city ,so the usuall reccomendations will apply, I man , walking in a poor illuminated street at 2am while holding your camera with a big smile on your face won't be so safe hehehe...
There are super secured neighbourhoods like "Puerto Madero" , I personally love that place and is SUPER SUPER safe ( actually is like being in a 1st world country ) . I own an apartment there and it's a great place.
Some pics of Puerto Madero

now let's talk about how much it will cost you living here :
Dinner at a good restaurant: $20 per person ( with a regular wine )
Dinner at the best restaurant in town:$40 ( with regular wine ) some pics

Happy meal at Mcdonalds: $7
20 min cab trip: $10
Buying food and stuff at the supermarket is more economical , actually we have the same prices you have in your country....yes believe it or not...we matched your prices
When you come here you are going to realize the huge amount of american people that live, study or chooses Buenos Aires to visit, so you won't feel so foreing.... ( We are talking about if you stay at the neighborhoods I listed before ).
Regarding accommodation you can find apartments from $800-1500 per month..it all depends who much you want to spend .
I am free to answer all the questions you have !
