I'd say if I was looking to shed a ton of weight, then the extreme yet safe diets are the way to go. I only need 10 lbs and I don't need them gone in two weeks. Sure I want to steadily lose weight and I can do it by cutting half of the crap that I am currently eating but I guess I'm just looking for something that I know I can stick to longer term.
The problem with some diets is that they are so restrictive that once you reach your desired weight, you go back to unhealthy habits.
