We always stock up on everything at the beginning of Hurricane season. Water, long-shelf life food, propane for cooking, gas for the generator, batteries, etc. We have long range walkie talkies if the cell towers go out, camping stoves, solar water heaters for showering, etc....
Having lived in LA during the 1994 Northridge quake, I"m not sure what an "earthquake kit" would consist of....
