I read the other thread, at least the part where you are talking about double opt-in e mail lists and I am sure that they make some people some money. Having said that and in recognition that it is perfectly legal to operate and exploit those lists it has been my personal experience over the years that surfers are fickle as fuck all. They will sign up to a double opt in list for a lot of different reasons.
some will do it because you offer them something for free if they do
some will do it out of genuine interest in the product or products you are offering
and some will do it because the voices in their head demanded they do it and they must obey.
Many of them forget they did it at all and if filters sniff bulk commercial e mails they are diverted to the spam folder. Or lets say it gets through to the user along with 79 illegitimate, actual spam e mails, yours looks the same. They check the spam box and delete.
The worst ones are the one who are pro-active and report spam. They seem to be cursed with a very short memory and a fear of clicking the opt out link because they believe from experience that doing so will confirm there is an active e mail and spam will increase 100 fold.
I witnessed this happen at 2 different companies, one you would have heard of and one you would never have heard of. Both were registered with a certain registrar that is very popular... one complaint and the domains were shut off and locked. No warning, no e mail letting you know they had been shut down. just turned off....
and all because some surfer got caught by his wife receiving porn e mails, or was having a shitty day or whatever.
I am sure double opt in lists make some people money but your truth or not it is something I would use sparingly
