LIMA, Ohio ? A 4-year-old-girl in Ohio is recovering after her dad accidentally backed over her with a riding lawn mower.

Authorities in Lima (LY'-muh) say the girl suffered severe injuries to her legs and is in fair condition at a Columbus hospital.

Allen County Sheriff Sam Crish says the father was mowing Sunday when he backed up near a tree and the mower shut down. He then noticed his daughter underneath the mower.

The sheriff tells The Lima News the man then lifted the mower off his daughter.

He says the girl had been playing outside and ended up behind the mower without her father knowing.

SOLON TOWNSHIP, MI -- A 5-year-old girl struck by a riding lawnmower tonight suffered severe injuries and died at the scene, Kent County Sheriff's investigators said.

The girl, whose name was not released, was believed to be playing in her yard at 17977 Marsh Creek Ave .NW when one of her parents accidentally struck her with the mower, police said.

"It's a very tragic and horrible accident," said Lt. Jeff McAlary of the 7 p.m. incident.
The home is off a private drive in a rural area near U.S. 131 and 22 Mile Road, the Sand Lake exit.

Police did not know if the girl was laying or crouching down in the grass at the time she was struck. The mower was described as a medium-sized riding lawnmower.

The parents were too distraught initially to give investigators specific details, McAlary said.

AeroMed, a medical helicopter, initially was put on standby for the accident, then was told it was not needed.

A chaplain was called to the scene.

The couple's 3-year-old child is being cared for by a neighbor.

The American Academy of Pediatrics estimates that about 10,000 children require care in the emergency room each year because of lawn mower accidents, including about 2,500 kids who are under five years of age.

In starting to follow these types of accidents, I am also surprised at just how often these lawn mower accidents cause serious injuries, including lost legs and severe lacerations, and how often they are fatal.

In addition to a 10-year-old boy who was killed while mowing a lawn last week in Georgia, there is a new report today of a five-year-old who died in Michigan after getting run over by a riding lawn mower. The child was playing in the grass and was run over by one of her parents who couldn't see her as they were mowing the lawn.

These tragic highlight the importance of raising awareness of lawn mower safety, including that:

children not operate a walk-behind power mower or hand mower until they are at least 12 years of age or a ride-on mower until at least 16 years of age

young children must not be allowed to play in or be adjacent to areas where lawn mowers are being used

children younger than 6 years should be kept indoors during mowing

Most importantly, don't let your child ride on your lap while you are mowing the lawn.

Lawn mower accidents are an all too common tragedy, especially this time of year. With an increased awareness of the dangers that can lead to these accidents, parents can hopefully take steps so that they are less likely to happen to their kids.
