This was in fact completely illegal. The United States has no legal right to send military force into a "friendly" country and start a firefight with the intention of kidnapping or killing someone. The catch here is no one outside of Pakistan gives a crap, and what are they going to do about it?
As for his kid, don't care. He can sue all he wants. They operate under the law - we can too.
