I just believe that in the search engine algorithm there is a difference specifically (maybe a flag of some sort set in the algorithm) that makes google serve results differently based on whether a site is "porn" or "not porn", if you are linking to sites that google considers "porn", then they are less likely to send surfers to you that are searching keywords that google considers "not porn"
I understand your point about aiming towards adults, but there is obviously something more to it from google's perspective, which can be seen in their, safe, moderate, 'unsafe' separations in searching, if you want the benefits of being a mainstream site, then it is not a good idea to put porn banners or links on your mainstream site, that is my belief

i've known people who have mixed it up with little issues, actually the link juice from his sites are stronger than most adult sites and i think it's because of it.
