The US military does shit like this every day in various locals around the world. Why should Osama and family be spared, armed or not? Kill them all, let Allah sort 'em out.
There are some situations where you go all out, and this was one of them. And they need to release the photos or I'm calling shenanigans.
To play devils advocate, I'm sure they could have pulled a wealth of info from him eventually if they would have taken him alive, which they could have done if they really wanted to.
