I figured the love part should go without saying.
It's the consistency part that so many parents don't seem to get. If a child knows that when their parent says something, they mean it... then they don't continue to test and know they don't have the upper hand.
It infuriates me when I'm in a store and I hear a parent say "If you do that one more time, we're leaving"... then the child does it again, throws a fit, and is then rewarded with a brand new shiny toy or candy bar.
