We've only had 1 paysite for 5 years and the other for 3 years. I think and can't be bothered to research so take it as that. They are the 4rd level of earning for us, behind magazines, content store, retail video sales, then paysites and finally sales to DVD companies.
I think at the height on
www.paulmarkhamteens.com we had a decent number recurring and now that's fallen. On
www.astral-blue.com it's probably only 200. and as it was launched so late it's never climbed to what it could of done.
When we thought about whether to go on the Internet in a big way it was either a content store or a paysite. This was 2000. Then there were so many sites that were obviously not making a lot of money. Met tons of them and they were struggling. Even with all there so called knowledge of paysites and marketing online.
Being in Czech with a seemingly limitless supply of good looking teens who had never been shot before the potential of this market was great. A 7 out of 10 girl is worth 4-6 sets solo. Selling them in the UK, US and EU that's a turn over of $12,000 to $18,000 a girl. Selling a set online seemed the best route, we thought it would add $300 to the profit. It turned out to be far far better than that, remember the cries that
"non-exclusive is saturated" that's music to a content producers ears. It means he sold the set or video a lot of times.
If you were around when I stated posting on boards you will of read I was very scathing of the quality of porn and the "marketing" which is basically. Give away as much free porn as possible and if you only convert 1-1,000 on gallery views, give away more free porn to convert 2-2,000. That's not marketing in any other industry.
As the quality of sites it was obvious putting up a site with Czech, Hungarian, Russian girls was a non starter. They didn't speak English and it would just be a site with lots of pretty girls with nothing to say. We could in no way emulate a site like FTV.
So it would of meant going back to the UK. Which would of meant losing the goldmine we had in magazine sales. We shot well over 2,000 scenes in 8 years while here. And the last year was only half a year. That's 250 scenes a year earning very good money.
Would you of given that up, to go back to the UK and shoot content for a website?
Could I of opened a paysite in 2000?
Could I of learnt how to
"market online"?

That's the stupidest piece of marketing advice ever. The problem is obvious. 1,000s of people are looking at his content on the gallery and simply don't want it. Banner size won't solve the problem.
But for the last 10 years that's been the basis of online porn marketing. It's not hard to learn. Which is why so many do it. And don't earn a lot.
But I don't know what I'm doing and all you guys do.
