So not personal worries here ....
But, the other day i found myself listening to a beautiful sexy song written in the 40/50 by Etta James .... So i thought, "dam! this would be really cool with the appropiate content ...", and i thought i heard once something on TV/radio that like after 50 years, the owner of a copyrighted material looses his rights on it and becomes of public interest ...
Just doing some research to make sure what i heard was right found this: "Happy Birthday" was actually composed originally in 1893 but not officially published until 1935. It is protected through 2030 and earns approximately a million dollars every year in royalties. Time Warner bought the copyright on the song ten years ago for $12 million based on what the expected value of its royalties, which was a great deal considering the company also got an additional twenty years worth of royalties when they extended the term.
So ... a part from the great deal Time Warner seems to had closed, how does all this shit works?
Is there a period of time where copyrights of music comes due and i can take it and use it as i wish? As i also saw a lot of other articles talking about re-gathering rights, even by not the OWNER ITSELF of the copyrighted content ... which seemed funny
It seems to be a picky subject, like with all copyright stuff, i guess some can give some input about it here?
