There are some games that have implemented their own economy with success. Second Life comes to mind with the L$ (linden dollar). Players exchange their countries currency for L$'s and L$'s for their countries currency. The L$ even increases and decreases in value as real world dollars do. They use L$'s to purchase goods, services, and virtual real estate in the game.
Implementing this type of system in the "real" world would definitely take some doing. I suppose if you were to design megastorewebsite.com and fill that site with products you earn a commission on, it could work. You could afford to offer x amount of megastorewebsite.com dollars for real dollars and still come out ahead in profit, and by forcing users to exchange their real dollars for yours, you're guaranteed either profit from selling products or from users who don't use all of the megastorewebsite.com dollars they purchased.
