The fact that he is dealing with an MOV tells me we are dealing with a MAC. I don't think windows movie maker will work with Macs.
Like i said, i had to deal with this and there were no free options that let me convert MOV into a WMV, Windows media 9 codec.
Even Sorenson Squeeze does not do Windows Media 9. I had to buy the plug WMV coder plug in to make it do what I needed it to do.
Compression is a whole field unto itself. There is are huge differences in video compressors. The quality and sizes that the different compressors put out are very different depending on the price for the programs.
Free=poor quality output at a large file size
Keep in mind when Hollywood compresses a movie for DVD or Blue ray, they use a 30K hardware and software combo compressor to compress their movie files. Why is that? Maybe they like spending the money?
Why is compression important? You want the highest quality at the smallest file size. Bigger files=better quality, but at the expense of streaming capabilities and bandwidth. Thats why a quality compressor is so important. Having the highest quality at the lowest file size is can be important depending on what your goals are.
Not trying to be a know it all, just trying to share some info, because I dealt with it when I was shooting a lot of 3D. The problem we had was this; We had 2 HD files staked on top of each other to start with. The higher the quality the better the 3D depth and POP. But the higher the quality the bigger the file sizes, the harder it is to stream.
It is a constant game of giving something to get something. Thats when i got heavy into understanding compression. This is not something i read somewhere, this is something me and 3 people dealt with and worked on for a month 40+ hours a week to get the best combination of high streamable quality videos at a smaller file size.
There is a difference and there is a shit load to know, depending on what you are trying to accomplish. Good luck
