Firefox 4.0 is a significant improvement over Firefox 3.x. If you currently run the earlier version you will definitely want to upgrade. While it is still not as fast as Chrome it has more features and extensions and is at least in the ballpark with the new version whereas before it was nowhere close.

I have also read that Mozilla is going for a rapid release of Firefox 5 with many more updates than they have traditionally made in the past. This is said to have been done to push the improvements to users faster and more closely match Chromium's release schedule.

You can disable all those update notifications by going into Edit - Preferences - Advanced - Updates (at least on my copy). IE is integrated into the OS in such a way that gives it an advantage as far as startup times. However, thankfully on average a person might start a browser up three times per day so this represents a grand total somewhere around five seconds per day depending on the system.
