What do you mean exactly by going down ? ... is it an error page that says there is to many active connections for the user ? or something else ?
There is several solutions to the problem but it all depends on you answering the above in order to tell you what the correct one is

P.S. I do know some shared hosts have been updating software as of late and know this is throwing up unexpected MySQL problems that did not exist before...
