I haven't watched the scene in question that Paul reviewed but based on the level of detail in the review and on my own experience as a director, videographer and editor it seems like he makes some very fair points. Maybe a bit picky in his criticism in a few places. But the overall thrust of his comments are sound. A few of the audio issues like a single plane flying by one time, a fire engine roaring by on the street one time or a high heel dropping onto a wooden floor with a loud thud are fleeting audio issues that that I would hate to break the model's concentration and momentum if she is peforming well masturbating. But those one off audio issues are usually fixable in post.

Even the criticisms about framing are pretty much right on the money though maybe also a tad picky in a few places. It's easy to second guess each and every angle after the fact when you have a model flipping around to masturbate in a half dozen or more different positions on or around a piece of furniture for 20-30 minutes, especially if the model is a newbie like so many of the girls I shoot. Though an experienced cameraman can usually get the correct angles to fill the frame by either moving around to create a new angle or stopping momentarilly and spending a few seconds giving updated instructions to the model of how to position herself.

Both Paul & Dave are 100% right though about videographers who don't edit their own scenes or at least who don't have video editing experience. There's no way someone can be a really good cameraperson who doesn't edit their own scenes. The two go hand in hand. Knowing how to edit gives one the knowledge on how to shoot so that the scenes cut together properly. I aim to deliver very editor friendly foootage to my clients. 99% of the footage I shoot gets used, and usually in almost the exacting sequence that it was shot in. I shoot old school style and go from one take in wide to the next in closeup and show every transition of movement so that there is no need to ever use a dissolve to join my scenes together even if there was a major break in continuity in real life due to a male losing wood or a phone ringing or whatever.

In my opinion, the other major factor that will make a producer perfect his craft at the highest level on how to produce and shoot porn with expertise is if he has experience putting up his own money up front to complete shoots and handling all the arrangements himself for absolutely everything including crew, talent, location and miscellaneous. From what I understand a few of very biggest online porn companies that produce a lot of content seem to place some kind of value- dubious value in my opinion- on using "producers" that work only under an exclusive arrangement to that company. And these so called producers- really directors/videographers would be a better terminology- pretty much just shoot who and what they are told to shoot using the equipment and crew that they are assigned, and shoot under pretty restrictive guidelines. That strategy may help create a relatively consistent product, but not necessarilly the best product in my opinion.

I feel blessed that I have been able to make and sustain a career primarily shooting the models I want with the crew and equipment that I feel comfortable with, in the locations that I want and in the overall style that I like. This, mostly because many clients specifically rely on me to keep coming up with fresh new hotties as part of my overall job as a full service producer & director and/or because they trust my judgement to choose better than anyone else who to shoot, even if subject to approval in certain cases. Anyway, it will be interesting to see how this experiment turns out for Paul.
