Before this Country was even founded, Corporations had already moved in and taxes being collected. Shortly after the Country was formed, Corporations and the Fed (internally) dealing with distilled spirits, carriages, refined sugar, tobacco and snuff, property sold at auction, corporate bonds, and slaves - where taxed internally, within the structure of those goods.
Then it moved back to taxing only imports/export of good, ie teriffs. Then during peace time, they tried to add an income tax to people, which was shot down.
Then in 1909, Congress setup the first 'Corporate' income tax, which was legal in way of an excise tax and a constitutional amendment to allow the previously enacted income tax (yep, had it before too). Corps were already getting taxed, this moved it to an income tax.
And bam, we have the base structure of the tax system we use today - which is, without question, legally taxed.
