Shaving doesn't have to be the normal "actual joins" versus "joins shown" routine though. There are different ways to effectively "shave" such as making the cookie last an hour, making the cookie system treat www.site.com and site.com as separate on purpose, making certain links drop or overwrite affiliate codes. Anyone who has been an affiliate in the business for any time has seen this. Sometimes it really is an accident but I think it would be incredibly naive to say that it always has been done by accident rather than calculated design.
