1. You do not have to get others to join to get the discounts. You can buy a deal and then if you get others to buy the same deal you can get yours for free.

2. The real work on this type of website is getting the deals and getting the user base. That is not a small feat.

3. Facebook is not held together by just some servers and engineers. Facebook is what it is because of the external partnerships it has and those requires a lot of teams of a lot of people to manage and maintain.

4. I predict Groupon will continue to grow and prosper. LivingSocial is doing a good job of growing and moving into interesting directions (like LivingSocial Escapes), but Groupon continues to be more user friendly IMHO.
