One thing to keep in mind is that when they license content, it's usually in bulk. Lots of content. I know they went to various DVD studios and made deals for many of their titles to use across their sites.
Keep in mind, this was a while ago and well before the shit hit the fan so to speak so most of the studios had no idea who they were licensing to at that time and really how it was going to be used, and those who did needed the money as the DVD industry has been in serious decline for several years now. And of course, some studios will whore out their content to ANYONE, like Combat Zone. And given the current state of things in porn valley, most of them would continue to license to them as they desperately need any money they can get. But I'm sure, regardless of their desperation, there was a LOT of face palming going on inside some of the studios once they figured everything out.
So while there are countless content producers who did get ripped off, there are a handful of large studios who more or less gave them the keys to their library. And you also have to think, it's not just PornHub or their other tubes, they also have MovieBox.com, which has something like 40,000+ licensed scenes.
