The cigarette originated in Turkey. During the Crimean War (1855), Turkish officers introduced the cigarette to English and French officers who, in turn, introduced it in their respective countries. Cigarette smoking only became prominent some 30 years later, however, when English officers, returning from a long campaign in Egypt, brought back vast supplies of cigarettes. And when the cigarette-making machine was invented by an American in 1865, it became possible to sell them at reasonable prices.
